jQuery is a cross-browser javascript library designed to make it easier to manipulate HTML elements and CSS attributes in real-time. This allows the user to create a very dynamic looking website. Combined with Ajax, the website can also retrieve, request, and save dynamic content in real time, this delivers the utmost interactive web-applications or websites.
The techniques are now formulated and both are well supported by all available browsers. Furthermore, subtle use of both techniques often offer a good user-friendly website all together. Yet, we find that designers and web designers do not always dwell on the possibilities. This often manifests itself in the website design, while great, it is clearly intended for static websites.
To properly implement these techniques, it is important to take into account of the possibilities at an early stage of the project site. That means during the design, but also and foremost, in discussing the desired website features with the end client. Chances are high that the end clients have never heard of jQuery or AJAX before and therefore, are unaware of what all the possibilities are.
Therefore, it is a good idea for designers or web designers to become familiar with the possibilities of what jQuery and AJAX have to offer. Some things which are to be realized are:
Ultimately, these are just some examples, the final possibilities are only limited by the creativity of the designer! Of course we can assist with the integration of existing jQuery plugins, copying existing custom-made plugins, or the development of custom-made solutions.
Some examples of websites where we worked on and used jQuery and AJAX are:
www.trinity24.de
Trinity has two applications, namely the Style Finder and the Charm Creator. Both applications are very original and dynamic. Also, the balls of the home page are animated through jQuery, but they are still completely manageable from the CMS.
www.littlestylist.com
At Little Stylist, the visitor can compose their own piece of clothing in real-time from using the CMS to manage dresses, sweaters and various applications.
www.bms-travellers.nl
For BMS-Travellers, we made a customized photo album plugin, which is used on virtually every page. The plugin works by default as a slideshow, but there is also a manual scroll through the photos by using thumbnails.
www.effio.eu
For Effio, we implemented jQuery to achieve the “pop-out” effect of the image on the landing page. The gallery of jQuery is also equipped to replace flash scripts and to navigate without using page refresh.
There are also numerous pages and blogs with good examples that are available on the Internet, these can also serve as sources of inspiration. We recommend to try and search the Internet and see what all the possibilities are!
